Welcome to Krishna’s Geography Journal! I am currently a PhD student and CIHR Vanier Scholar at the University of Saskatchewan in the Department of Geography and Planning. My research area looks at drought-induced poor air quality (caused by wildfire smoke and dust storms) and its health impacts on Saskatchewan communities. I also work with First Nations communities in the province to understand self-reported health impacts, coping methods, and adaptation strategies related to drought-induced poor air quality.
I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Saskatchewan in 2018. During this time, I completed a Bachelors of Arts and Science Honours in Health Studies, with a minor in Psychology and a concentration in Changing Climates and Health. My honours research project looked at how air quality has changed in the Great Plains Air Zone in Saskatchewan from 2001-2021 and provided potential respiratory implications that might have impacted Saskatchewan communities as a result. You can read about this project here!
I completed my Masters degree at the University of Saskatchewan in the fall of 2024. I worked as a CIHR CGS-M Scholar with the Department of Geography and Planning and the Global Institute for Water Security at USASK on a project that looked at the environmental drivers of drought-induced poor air quality and the risk of poor air quality on hospitalizations in Saskatchewan.
Now, I have be continuing my graduate school journey at the University of Saskatchewan as a Vanier Scholar (CIHR) through the Department of Geography and Planning and Global Institute for Water Security. I will continue my work with drought-induced poor air quality and human health through my PhD project. I am also involved in the Geography and Planning Graduate Student Council (you can learn more here) and the Global Institute for Water Security Students and Young Researchers (GIWS-SYR, which you can learn more about here) at USASK.
I decided to make this living journal of my experiences as a graduate student because I want to share my research and the opportunities I have taken part in throughout my time at USASK and as a Vanier Scholar. I am incredibly grateful for all of the opportunities that I have had in my undergraduate and masters program and look forward to what my PhD program will bring. I hope to use this blog as a place to share my research, extracurricular activities, presentations, projects, and the many opportunities I have experienced and experience in my graduate studies.
I look forward to sharing my adventures with you and I hope that you enjoy being able to follow my work as I progress through my programs.
